The word technology can be used loosely to describe something or an area of work. The word can also be used very specifically when talking about a detailed design or idea. Electronic components are generally classed as either active or passive. The easiest way to define between the two is by asking whether the component can supply energy to itself. A battery can be thought of as an active element as it really can provide energy to itself, a passive component is the opposite.
